Project Description

The Light Bead Curtain is an interactive musical installation that can be freely played by person's touch. The installation takes the familiar form of a beaded curtain that consists of strings of simple clear beads. Each bead, on a users touch, lights itself and emits a unique sound. People play with the curtain by weaving their hands through it, touching it with their faces, and moving through it with their body. An environment of light and sound is created when people engage with the curtain.

The curtain's play mechanism—touching a bead to turn a light inside on or off, and emit a sound—is very simple and direct. Because of this, as someone touches the curtain, they can easily understand how to play. This digitally re-created curtain, with an easy, simple, and direct nature will give people a fresh look at everyday things, and this simple application of digital technology will instill their everyday life with a pleasant imagination.

Although the curtain is primarily meant to be played with by a person, each bead is controllable and programmable via a computer. In this manner, the curtain can function as an interactive display.

User experience

The Light Bead Curtain will look similar to a normal beaded curtain—a form people are already familiar with. The curtain's play mechanism—touching a bead to turn on or off a light and emit a sound—is very simple and direct. Users will be able to touch the curtain and easily understand how to play. This digitally re-created curtain, with its simple and direct nature will give people a fresh look at everyday things, and this simple application of digital technology will stir their imagination and instill their everyday life with inspiration.

Future of this project

We seek to explore how people interact with objects incorporating simple, direct relationships between light and sound. In the future these concepts will be applied to other everyday things such as a column, a ball, and perhaps furniture—many of which possess a familiar and inviting nature.
